First came the search among local grannies about what grape varieties the people in Suchá nad Parnou used to grow. All of them, with a dreamy look in their eyes, agreed upon the Blue Portugal. Historical sources date back to the 17th century in a reference to the Blue Portugal within this region.
Blue Portugal has become our dominant variety - as a sign of respect for the past, the genius loci, as well as due to very logical consideration of finding our place among the Slovak wine producers who were growing ever better. Who would care about another Cabernet or Merlot, grape varieties which literally flooded the world and Slovakia.
Thus we have become one of the few wine producing companies bringing this original variety proudly to the table of the wine lovers.
We have obtained the material for planting stocks from the original vineyards the fragments of which still exist in places where Ružová dolina valley meets the neighbouring valley called Vlčia dolina.
The rest of our vineyard on the Rosenberg hill is planted with Saint Laurent (Svatovavřinecké) and Alibernet, Rhein Riesling (Rizling rýnsky) and Sauvignon blanc.
Regular breeze from Malé Karpaty dries, cools and aerates the grapes every evening around half past nine and together with the evening tranquillity attracts rabbits and pheasants and deters the wine rots.
Warm days before the grape harvest are treacherous. Walking in the morning, we predict two days to harvest and finally, after the evening check, we often have to call for friends, acquaintances at the last minute; they willingly harvest the grapes in the morning: manually into special shallow boxes in order to prevent bruising and early pressing.
Specific atmosphere of the local vineyards inspired František Hečko, the writer and native of Suchá nad Parnou to write a novel "The Red Wine" (Červené víno) which is taking place in this very region, in the neighbouring valley Vlčia dolina (Vlčindol). In a fair view he describes the environment and life of a wine-growing family with their every day joys and concerns.
